Steve Hoffman
Senior Consultant - Tokyo, Japan
Steve received his undergraduate education in Chemistry & Physics at the University of Pacific in Stockton, California. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earning his M.S. in Chemical Engineering, and then at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business, where he completed his MBA.
Steve has spent almost 25 years working in both the U.S. and Japan for Japanese & U.S. multinational corporations. He spent 6 years with Hewlett Packard Company , including 2 years in their Palo Alto Headquarters, where he was responsible for Financial Reporting for HP's Japanese joint venture, Yokogawa Hewlett Packard. He also worked on consecutive 2-year assignments in YHP's Hachioji Factory and HP's Logic Systems Division in Colorado Springs, focusing on cost and general accounting, respectively.
Joining Sony Corporation in Japan in 1988, he held a variety of positions in the TV & Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Business Groups, including Business Planning, Procurement, and Financial Reporting. During this 14-year span, he worked geographically in Tokyo, Atsugi, and finally on a 5-year assignment in Sony's Pittsburgh Technology Center.
Beginning in 1999, Steve was a member of the initial project team for Sony's Corporate Management Training and Development Program, Sony University. He supported Sony’s customized MBA program, and also worked closely with UCLA for several years implementing a management development program targeted at high potential middle and senior management worldwide. Returning to Japan in 2002, he led the effort to establish a talent development process for Sony's Global Sales & Marketing Organization. This included leading a cross-regional Human Resources project team which developed a common Leadership Competency Model to evaluate both Japanese & non-Japanese members of the Global Talent Pool.
