Xiao-rui Zhang
Facilitator - Tokyo, Japan

Xiao Rui is a native of Xian and holds an Ed. D (Doctor of Education) from Temple University. Her major research interests are in the area of social linguistics. Employing ethnographic research methodology and utilizing discourse analysis as her major means of academic inquiry, she has been focusing her research on the intercultural interpretations of communication between Chinese and Japanese.. Her publications include Chugoku de Seiko Suru Jinzai Management Manual (Human Resource Management Manual for Succeeding in China) (coauthored), A Longitudinal Ethnographic Study of Chinese Students in Japan and Chinese Women Studying Abroad in Japan. She has membership in several academic associations.

Xiao Rui recently expands her research interests into the area of media studies with a focus on Chinese and Japanese media discourse analysis and comparison. She attempts to explore how cultural differences are reflected in the media discourses in both countries, and how these differences influence common people’s perceptions of the other country. She hopes that her research findings will help to improve the mutual understanding between the two nations.

Xiao Rui taught at Temple University's Japan campus for seven years, teaching academic English courses to international students in the content areas of social sciences -- sociology, physiology, and anthropology. She is now an Associate Professor at Meisei University, where she is teaching courses in intercultural communication, qualitative research methods, and the Chinese language. She also frequently conducts corporate seminars.
