Sarah Fremerman Aptilon
Mexico Representative - Mexico City, Mexico
Sarah Fremerman Aptilon holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies (focusing on Japanese Buddhism) from Stanford University.
Sarah has the unique experience of a lengthy immersion in a very traditional Japanese organization – she spent seven years living and working at a Buddhist monastery in Kyoto, Japan. While there she presented lectures, workshops, and study groups, organized and led week-long meditation retreats, served as a translator and interpreter, and founded and edited a quarterly journal. Her participation in both the daily rituals and business operations of this institution has given her a unique perspective on Japanese organizational behavior.
Sarah is experienced teaching about Japan, having taught courses at Stanford University and Santa Clara University in Japanese Religions and Zen Buddhism. She has also been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centro de Estudios de Asia y África at El Colegio de México in Mexico City, and at the Historiographical Institute at the University of Tokyo.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Sarah is fluent in both spoken and written Japanese and Spanish. She has been active as a freelance translator and has also taught the Japanese language. Sarah also has basic speaking skills in French and Chinese.
