JAPAN INTERCULTURAL CONSULTING LAUNCHES INTERCULTURAL COACHING SERVICES IN EUROPE
May 03, 2007

Japan Intercultural Consulting, an international training and consulting firm, announced today they are now offering intercultural coaching in the UK. For many years, Japan Intercultural Consulting has offered cross-cultural training to executives who face challenging situations such as expatriation or managing multicultural teams. The coaching service effectively complements the training by focusing on individual needs of the executives.

Knowledge about culture is not enough to bridge cultural gaps. Executives who work in multicultural environments have to constantly develop self-awareness and manage their emotions. Frustration caused by cultural differences may lead to a breakdown of relationships with colleagues and poor business performance, but coaching can effectively help executives to avoid these cross-cultural pitfalls.

Cecile Buckenmeyer, one of Japan Intercultural Consulting's executive coaches, explains: “Coaching is perfectly adapted to help executives facing challenging cross-cultural situations. It gives individual clients the time and space to think and reflect on themselves and their environment. It helps them sustain their self-awareness and the confidence to develop their own ‘bridging strategies' – a unique, personal solution to a cross-cultural problem.”

One of the objectives of intercultural coaching, like training, is to acknowledge the challenges related to working in a multi-cultural environment. The efforts that all members of staff make to work effectively together need to be supported and valued. In addition to training, coaching also helps each executive to reflect on and find constructive solutions to the day-to-day issues that arise in their particular work environment.

As in other forms of coaching, the intercultural coach only uses his cross-cultural expertise to build rapport and help his clients empathise with colleagues and partners from other cultures. The quality of his work does essentially rely on his ability to help his clients develop their own strategies and solutions.
